Our run of good weather is over. We knew it was coming but there was always hope. It was supposed to rain from 9 am, but it was drizzling right from the get-go at 6 am and never let up until we arrived at the albergue. The only saving grace was that it never came down hard. All the same, everyone was completely soaked inside and out.
We started early not knowing how the rain would slow down the hill portion of the day. Fortunately for us, the rocks are not too slippery. There was actually a rocky path with water streaming down but not quite submerging the rocks. I can't help but wonder what that stream is going to be like if it starts pouring; whether it is even passable.
So far, we have mixed the known routes of Camino Portuguese. We started right at coast from Porto to Vila do Conde, what Brierley described as quieter natural pathways. We followed Senda Litoral to Esposende and then switched over to the main Coastal route after Viana do Castelo. The routes merged today at Ancora. We were happy to take the inland option at Moledo towards Caminha to cut down on the wind and driving rain.
We made the albergue way too early, under absolutely miserable condition; wet and cold. Instead of us all leaving for lunch and lost our hard-earned spot in the line, three of us went out searching for foods. We found a submarine sandwich shop close by that also provided hot soup and warm sanctuary from the weather.
The albergue is fantastic; not only did they let my brother wait inside the building way before it opens. And they let everyone in by opening an hour early. Now we are safe and warm inside, the only worry is to find ways to dry all our stuff.
